The Arc of Transformation

The core map of Threshold Work, developed by Dr. Irem Gunay from her practice and theoretical work.

This framework does two things. It maps the territory of fundamental change: the stages it moves through, and the dimensions of life it touches. And it offers a way of locating yourself within that territory, so you can see where you are and what the next movement might be.

At its center is the threshold itself, Seeing and Shifting: the in-between where the old no longer holds and the new is still forming. This crossing is often felt before it is understood, and it asks for inner as well as outer work.

The stages and dimensions reflect patterns that recur across very different lives. They draw on established research on human flourishing and have been refined through work with clients at threshold moments.

This is a working map rather than a fixed model, offered to make the way through easier to see. Each stage can take a different shape in each life.

The Arc of Transformation

From Living Unconsciously to Living Consciously

Unconscious living
The threshold
Conscious living
Stage 1Unaware
Stage 2Seeing
Stage 3Shifting
Stage 4Awake
Unconscious living
Stage 1 — Unaware
Carried forward by momentum. A life shaped before it was chosen. Living from a script you didn't write. Driven by fear, habit, and a story about who you are supposed to be.
The work of transformation
Stage 2 — Seeing
A space opens: what you say matters and how you actually live tell different stories. What has been orienting you is beginning to come into view. The force beneath your choices slowly becoming visible.
Stage 3 — Shifting
Getting more familiar with what has been preventing change. Separating what is genuinely yours from what you were taught to value. The inquiry is live. New choices becoming possible.
Conscious living
Stage 4 — Awake
A full integration of what you say matters and how you spend your days. Choosing deliberately from genuine self-understanding. Living from the inside out.
Unconscious living
Stage 1 — Unaware
Living from patterns that feel familiar. Comfort mistaken for choice. Running on autopilot. Carried through the days. Not yet freely directing them. Alive, but not fully living.
The work of transformation
Stage 2 — Seeing
A gap becomes visible between how the days are passing and how they could be lived. A moment of unexpected lightness. A taste of freedom. A sense of what it might feel like to live differently.
Stage 3 — Shifting
Something stirs. Acting against the familiar. Chosen differently. New habits slowly taking root. The days beginning to feel more like a choice. Beginning to allow lightness in deliberately.
Conscious living
Stage 4 — Awake
Living as you actually choose to live. No longer living against yourself. Life held lightly even when taken seriously. Room for spontaneity. Living with ease.
Unconscious living
Stage 1 — Unaware
The pattern fires faster than awareness can arrive. What gets in the way is not yet visible. Feels like just life.
The work of transformation
Stage 2 — Seeing
You can see what needs to change but something keeps pulling you back.
Stage 3 — Shifting
Understanding what the resistance is protecting. Not forcing through it.
Conscious living
Stage 4 — Awake
Old patterns have lost their grip. Fear no longer decides.
Unconscious living
Stage 1 — Unaware
Disconnected from emotions. Or controlled by them. Reacting before noticing.
The work of transformation
Stage 2 — Seeing
Beginning to notice recurring emotional patterns. The situations vary. The reactions don't.
Stage 3 — Shifting
Beginning to feel emotions rather than manage or suppress them. Reading emotions as information, not fact. The feeling is real. The meaning it carries may not be. Meeting discomfort with curiosity rather than reaction.
Conscious living
Stage 4 — Awake
Fully feeling emotions. Emotions no longer in the driving seat. Fully present to whatever arises. Able to receive what is pleasurable and remain with what is uncomfortable.
Unconscious living
Stage 1 — Unaware
Tension, anxiety, restlessness accepted as normal.
The work of transformation
Stage 2 — Seeing
You begin to notice it in the body: a tightening, a closing down.
Stage 3 — Shifting
Learning to pause before reacting. Beginning to ask what the body is telling you.
Conscious living
Stage 4 — Awake
Not in your head. Living in your body. Aware of being alive in it. The body is inhabited, not just carried around. Seeing clearly what the body holds. Able to move consciously from contracted to expansive.
Unconscious living
Stage 1 — Unaware
The self feels like a fixed object that must be protected, validated, and maintained. Defined by roles absorbed before they were chosen. Driven to prove.
The work of transformation
Stage 2 — Seeing
Sensing something fundamental must change. Held between what was and what could be. Something is asking you to step forward.
Stage 3 — Shifting
Beginning to loosen the hold of the familiar self. Starting to move beyond the edges of who you have been. Discomfort as signal.
Conscious living
Stage 4 — Awake
Living from your own center. Identity rests lightly. Roles are worn, not gripped.
Unconscious living
Stage 1 — Unaware
Life lived on the surface. Moving through experience without fully tasting it. Beauty, meaning, depth passing unnoticed. The world as background to the personal story.
The work of transformation
Stage 2 — Seeing
The mystery arrives before you are seeking it. A moment of beauty, love, or stillness that briefly dissolves the boundary of the self. The ordinary becomes luminous. The hollowness of daily existence is felt through the presence of its opposite.
Stage 3 — Shifting
Deliberately seeking depth. Learning to be present to what cannot be grasped. The boundary of the self beginning to soften. Something larger beginning to enter. Unnameable. But unmistakably real.
Conscious living
Stage 4 — Awake
Life met fully. Lived from presence. Open to what transcends the individual self. Genuinely connected. Living from a deeper ground.
Change is rarely linear. You may find yourself at a different stage in each of these.
The seeing itself is the beginning.
